Kyle Busch held off Mark Martin in a tight battle in the closing laps to win Saturday night’s Sharpie 500 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. Busch scored his fourth NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory this season. Cars using WIX Filters have now won 11 of the 22 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races this season in addition to the Budweiser Shootout and Sprint All-Star Race.
But to earn the trip to victory lane, Busch raced hard with series veteran Mark Martin. The race went green for the final time on lap 496 of the 500-lap event with Busch leading Martin. Despite getting a fender alongside Busch with two laps to go, Martin could not pull off the pass. Busch won, officially edging Martin by just .098 seconds (approximately one car length).
“Man, what an honorable racecar driver Mark Martin is,” Busch said after the race. “It’s such an honor to race with him and to give him the room that he needed for him to give me the room that I needed was awesome. I can’t thank him enough. He didn’t let me win the race but he certainly didn’t take it from us. Tonight we had what mattered most when it mattered most and we were able to get the victory tonight.”
Busch earned WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors at Bristol. He led the race just once covering the final 68 laps. Busch and Tony Stewart are tied for the lead in the overall WIX Filters Lap Leader standings (6-6).
“The whole M&M’s team did a phenomenal job this weekend,” Busch said. “They really worked hard. We tried making the car better in practice and made a lot of changes to it and everything and again the guys made some smart calls there during the race. We worked on it all night. We never gave up on it. We never had the best car, I didn’t feel like. We just kept plugging away at making some adjustments trying to make the car faster, trying to make it better in the short run, better in the long run where it was capable enough of keeping up with the 5 [Martin] in general, man.”
Busch is 13th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship standings, 34 points behind 12th-place Matt Kenseth and a spot in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
The average speed of the race was 84.820 mph and the official time of the event was 3 hours, eight minutes and 31 seconds. There were 12 lead changes among five drivers and 11 cautions slowed the pace for 76 laps.
